You guys. Today is the last day of school before spring break. You are never going to guess what is going on right now and this weekend. A mess. That’s what.
On Wednesday, my second daughter, RaeLynne, came home not feeling well. She got in the car right after I picked her up from school and immediately told me that she wasn’t feeling well. She said she was cold all day and her stomach hurt. Then she said something that completely threw me for a loop, and I knew she wasn’t making up feeling sick. She asked me if we could skip Jiu-Jitsu so she can go home and go to sleep. What?!! That girl gets so upset when she has to miss Jiu-Jitsu!! She hates missing any possible time on the mats. I knew right then and there that this girl was really sick.
As soon as everyone was in the truck and buckled, I took off for home. I called Phillip on my way home and told him what was going on. He was just as surprised as I was that she actually asked to skip Jiu-Jitsu. Once we got home, she immediately changed into warm pajamas and went to bed. She didn’t even want to eat supper on Wednesday. That is definitely not like her. This girl eats all the time. Pretty sure I’m jealous of her metabolism. I think she only got up one time to use the bathroom, but other than that, she stayed in bed and slept all afternoon and night.
I was hoping that getting some extra sleep would help her and get her back on her feet. She rarely gets sick, and when she does, it’s usually only for an evening or so. She’s usually back on her feet by morning.
Thursday morning didn’t quite turn out the way I was expecting. She got up at six like normal. She walked from her bed to the bathroom and then right to my bed. She climbed in, burrowed her way into the blankets, and went right back to sleep. She was obviously not going to school that day. She woke up one time so I could take her temperature and give her some fever medicine. I usually prefer to just let their system fight off the fever and the sickness, but her fever was getting a little too high for my comfort. Other than that, she slept until noon. This is not at all like RaeLynne. She is my “up early, go all day” girl. She’s a tough little cookie.
When she finally woke up from her six-hour nap in my bed, I told her if she wasn’t feeling any better in the next couple of hours, I was going to take her with me when I picked up her sister so we could go to the walk-in clinic and get her tested for Strep throat. She said ok. Yet again, not like RaeLynne. She hates going to the doctor.
When the time came to leave, I asked her how she was doing. She looked terrible. I asked her if she wanted to go get checked out. She barely even hesitated and said yes. Poor kid! She got up and got herself dressed and ready to go. We picked up her sister at school and headed right over to the walk-in clinic. Thankfully, there was no waiting line and we were ushered right in to see the nurse practitioner. We went through all the weigh-ins and temperatures, etc. (by the way, remember I said this girl never stops eating? Well, when they took her weight, the little turkey had only gained two pounds in the last year. Seriously. What a joke. Why can’t I do that?! Anyway, back to RaeLynne).
The nurse explained to RaeLynne that she was going to rub a little Q-tip like thing inside her nose and then another one on the back of her throat so we could run a couple tests. She said ok, and the nurse got to work. Once the samples were taken, we were told it would take about thirty minutes to get the results. We walked around the store for a little while and came back about twenty minutes later. Shortly after, the results were in, and the nurse pulled us back into the room to give us the results.
She looked at RaeLynne and told her she was surprised that she looked as good as she did. RaeLynne tested positive for Strep A and Influenza A. Seriously. I guess when my kids want to get sick or hurt themselves, they don’t go half way. They like to do a “good” job.
So, antibiotics, here we are. RaeLynne missed another day of school today. I don’t think she was terribly heartbroken. Spring break starts on Monday, so she gets an extended one. Little monkey. In a way, I’m glad she got sick when she did because the flu has been knocking people down for at least a week this year. It’s been a rough February/March for sickness around this area. But, I am hoping that she can keep this to herself and not get everyone else sick! I really don’t want to be dealing with a whole house full of sick people for the next month. Getting the flu and strep through a household of seven will take a while and is not exactly enjoyable. I can think of much better uses for our time!
So that was our fun for this week. But that’s not where it’s going to end over the weekend. Yes, it’s March. But we live in Minnesota. Anyone want to venture a guess what is on the schedule for Saturday and Sunday?? Snow. That’s what. And not just a little bit of it. We are supposed to get up to a foot of fresh snow this weekend. Another joke. I’m really beginning to think that Minnesota hates everyone.
But, on the bright side, next week is supposed to be in the 30s and 40s!!! I can’t wait. Hopefully we don’t get flooded out of the house or anything, but it’s going to be warm! We currently have close to four feet of snow in our yard. It’s worse in other parts of the state. Things may get interesting this spring (if it ever comes) when all the snow melts. I’m sure there will be some flooding, but hopefully nothing crazy.
I hope your week has been a little smoother than ours has been this week, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Go do something fun and enjoy it!
